Cheer on a Champion

Battle of the Books

The other day I received an email request from a student named Jordyn who is participating in Battle of the Books. She is doing her project on ....Drum roll please...The Great Brain. I am excited to help her out. As she goes along, I will keep you updated.

Go Jordyn

  1. I just finished The Great Brain Is Back, a book published long after I had read J.D. Fitzgerald's Great Brain series as a boy. I had bought the book maybe a year ago on some site or other when I read about it during a nostalgic romp through book sites one day, and found the time to read it, without interruption, from cover to cover.

These books are not just marvelous entertainment. We are treated to a thoughtful character study of an older brother by the younger, shown how Tom capitalizes on his powerful intellect and teaches important life lessons in logic to his peers and to himself. Mr. Fitzgerald's vivid depictions of the lives of people of the period seem so authentic I would venture he outdoes even the great Mark Twain, with whom I think he shares a literary kinship.

    1. I agree with you. When I was first introduced to the series, I was told they were a combination of Little House on the Prairie meets Huckleberry Finn. Mark Twain would be proud of the comparison.
